What the MRSA measures
Spatial aptitude is a core component of "Fluid Intelligence" (Gf)—the ability to solve novel reasoning problems independent of acquired knowledge. The ability to mentally manipulate 3D shapes is highly predictive of success in fields requiring complex physical modeling, such as mechanical engineering, organic chemistry, architecture, aviation, and surgery. Unlike verbal or crystallized intelligence tests, mental rotation tests are heavily right-brain dominant and relatively culturally unbiased.
The dimensions it assesses
- Mental Rotation: The speed and accuracy with which a user can hold a complex 3D block figure in working memory and mathematically rotate it across X, Y, and Z axes.
- Spatial Perception: The ability to determine spatial relationships with respect to the orientation of one's own body (filtering out distracting visual noise).
- ~~Processing Speed~~: Not measured. This dimension was listed on the basis that the test is "strictly timed", and it is not timed here. Reaction-time capture is a real thing to build, but claiming to measure processing speed without measuring time would be the same error as printing a percentile with no norming sample.

The scoring logic must be extremely strict to prevent random guessing (which is highly likely on timed visual tests).

These ranges describe groups of people, not individuals. A score near a boundary is not meaningfully different from one just across it, and no range on this table is a diagnosis.
What to do with your result
- Neuroplasticity & Trainability: Unlike working memory capacity, spatial aptitude is highly trainable. Users who score low can significantly increase their scores by playing 3D video games (like Tetris, Portal, or first-person spatial puzzle games) or engaging in physical CAD modeling.
- Career Routing: Users scoring 15+ should be explicitly flagged for STEM, architecture, logistics, or tactical operational roles where spatial intelligence is a primary bottleneck for success.
- Mitigating Test Anxiety: Because the test is timed and visually overwhelming, a 2-question untimed "Practice Round" with immediate feedback must be enforced before the real 7-minute timer begins.

- What does the MRSA measure?

- Can the MRSA diagnose me?
- No. Spatial Reasoning (MRSA) is a screening questionnaire, not a diagnostic tool. It can flag that something may need a closer look. It cannot tell you what is causing it. It describes tendencies rather than diagnosing anything, and no result here is a condition or something to fix.
- How long does the MRSA take?
- 20 questions, which most people finish in 7 – 10 minutes. There is no time limit, and answering honestly matters more than answering quickly. The results page checks for patterns suggesting the questions were rushed.
- Is this MRSA test really free?
- Yes. No account, no email address, no payment. Psychometrics Today is funded by donations rather than advertising, which is also what allows us to publish instruments whose authors permit free but non-commercial use.
- Are my answers stored or shared?
- No. Your answers are scored inside your browser and never sent to us. There is no database of responses, because we never receive any. Closing the tab erases them, which is why results cannot be recovered afterwards.
- How often should I retake the MRSA?
- Traits and preferences move slowly, so retaking this every few months is more informative than retaking it often. Larger shifts usually follow a genuine change in circumstances.
- Who created the MRSA, and is this the real version?
- It was published by Psychometrics Today (original stimuli). Mental rotation is a public research paradigm (Shepard & Metzler, 1971). The items here are the published ones rather than a paraphrase, and the scoring follows the original rules. Both are documented on this page so they can be checked.
- How accurate is the MRSA?
- Screening questionnaires are good at flagging that something merits attention and poor at establishing what it is. This one is sensitive to how you feel on the day you take it, and many instruments were validated on narrow populations whose cut-offs may not transfer cleanly to everyone.
