Team Role (Belbin)

Identification of the 9 behavioral clusters (roles) individuals adopt within a team environment.

Why you cannot take this one here

The Belbin is not free to reproduce. Proprietary; Belbin licenses and enforces the nine team-role instrument.

We will not publish an instrument we do not have the right to publish. So this page explains what it measures and how it is scored rather than administering it. Everything below is accurate and sourced. It just is not the questionnaire itself.

A free alternative: Publish an explainer on team-role theory and build original role-preference items.

What the Belbin measures

Dr. Meredith Belbin discovered that the success of a team does not depend on the intellect of its members, but on their behavior and how those behaviors interlock. A "Team Role" is defined as a tendency to behave, contribute, and interrelate with others in a particular way. A highly effective team requires a balance of all 9 roles, though not necessarily 9 people (as individuals often have 2-3 preferred roles).

The dimensions it assesses

  • Thinking / Problem-Solving Roles:
  • Plant (PL): Creative, imaginative, unorthodox. Solves difficult problems.
  • Monitor Evaluator (ME): Sober, strategic, discerning. Judges accurately.
  • Specialist (SP): Single-minded, self-starting, dedicated. Provides rare knowledge.
  • Action-Oriented Roles:
  • Shaper (SH): Challenging, dynamic, thrives on pressure. Drives action.
  • Implementer (IMP): Disciplined, reliable, conservative. Turns ideas into actions.
  • Completer Finisher (CF): Painstaking, conscientious, anxious. Searches out errors.
  • People-Oriented Roles:
  • Co-ordinator (CO): Mature, confident, identifies talent. Clarifies goals and delegates.
  • Teamworker (TW): Co-operative, mild, perceptive. Averts friction.
  • Resource Investigator (RI): Extroverted, enthusiastic, communicative. Explores opportunities.

What to do with your result

  1. Self-Awareness (Allowable Weaknesses): Every Belbin role has an "allowable weakness" (e.g., Shapers can be aggressive; Plants can be absent-minded). Users must learn to manage these weaknesses so they don't become "disallowable" toxic traits.
  2. Team Synergies: Pair specific roles together for maximum effect. A Plant (ideas) should be paired with an Implementer (execution). A Shaper (driver) needs a Teamworker (harmonizer) to soothe bruised egos.
  3. Gap Analysis for Managers: If a project is failing, map the team's Belbin profiles. If a team has 4 Shapers and 0 Implementers, they will argue endlessly about direction but execute nothing.

Common questions about the Belbin

What does the Belbin measure?
Identification of the 9 behavioral clusters (roles) individuals adopt within a team environment.
Can the Belbin diagnose me?
No. Team Role (Belbin) is a screening questionnaire, not a diagnostic tool. It can flag that something may need a closer look. It cannot tell you what is causing it. It describes tendencies rather than diagnosing anything, and no result here is a condition or something to fix.
Is this Belbin test really free?
Yes. No account, no email address, no payment. Psychometrics Today is funded by donations rather than advertising, which is also what allows us to publish instruments whose authors permit free but non-commercial use.
Are my answers stored or shared?
No. Your answers are scored inside your browser and never sent to us. There is no database of responses, because we never receive any. Closing the tab erases them, which is why results cannot be recovered afterwards.
How often should I retake the Belbin?
Traits and preferences move slowly, so retaking this every few months is more informative than retaking it often. Larger shifts usually follow a genuine change in circumstances.
How accurate is the Belbin?
Screening questionnaires are good at flagging that something merits attention and poor at establishing what it is. This one is sensitive to how you feel on the day you take it, and many instruments were validated on narrow populations whose cut-offs may not transfer cleanly to everyone. The references at the foot of this page are the primary sources.
Why can I not take the Belbin here?
Proprietary; Belbin licenses and enforces the nine team-role instrument. We will not reproduce a questionnaire we have no right to reproduce, so this page explains what it measures instead. Publish an explainer on team-role theory and build original role-preference items.
